# Backup generation for extended outages

The UPS carries the load for minutes; the generator set, for the hours that follow. We integrate both so the transfer is automatic and tested.

A generator set takes over the load when a grid outage lasts longer than the UPS runtime. We integrate generator sets with automatic transfer switchgear, coordinated with the UPS system, so the critical room moves to generation without manual intervention—and we maintain them with documented periodic tests.

## The role of the generator set in a critical room

UPS systems are designed to bridge the transition: from the moment the grid fails until the generator starts, stabilizes and takes the load. If the generator doesn’t start or the transfer fails, battery runtime runs out and the room shuts down. That is why the generator, the transfer and the UPS are designed and tested as a single system.

## What is included

- **Automatic transfer switch (ATS) integration** with controllers to switch to generation during grid outages.
- **Coordination with the UPS system** so the transition is transparent to the critical load.
- **Redundant generation schemes** when the availability level requires it.
- **Periodic start and transfer tests**, with results logged.
- **Monitoring** of generator status and alarms integrated into the DCIM platform.

## Field experience

At the banking data center we designed and operate, backup generation is redundant, with Onan-Cummins generator sets, automatic transfer and periodic testing as part of the site’s daily operation.

## Does your generator start when you need it?

We review the generator, the transfer and their coordination with the UPS.

Coordinated backup

## Generation, transfer and UPS as a single system

- ### Extended backup

Runtime for outages lasting hours, beyond the batteries.
- ### Automatic transfer

Switching to generation without manual intervention.
- ### Documented tests

Periodic starts and transfers, with logs.

Frequently asked questions

## Generator sets: frequently asked questions

Can’t find your question?

[ Ask us](https://wa.me/5493513537584?text=Hello%20PowerPlus%2C%20I%20would%20like%20to%20ask%20about%20a%20project.)

Why do I need a generator if I already have a UPS?Because the UPS has limited runtime from its batteries. The generator covers extended outages; the UPS covers the transition until the generator takes the load.

How often should the generator be tested? We recommend periodic start tests and on-load transfer tests according to the site’s maintenance plan. An untested generator does not guarantee backup.

Can the generator be monitored remotely?Yes. We integrate generator and transfer status and alarms into the room’s monitoring platform.
